Dr. Benjamin T. Raines

Dr. Raines is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon and fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He graduated cum laude with an undergraduate degree in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL, where he also received a Master of Arts in Health Education and Health Promotion concentrating in Sports Medicine. Further, he completed post-baccalaureate and graduate studies and research in biochemistry and genetics. He graduated medical school from the University of Alabama School of Medicine at UAB in Birmingham, AL, and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, in Columbia, MO. After residency, he completed a one-year orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in Pittsburgh, PA, sub-specializing in advanced arthroscopic techniques, ligament reconstruction, and shoulder replacement. Dr. Raines is also certified in robotic-assisted hip and knee replacements.
Dr. Raines has a passion for sports medicine and the health of athletes and active individuals. During the past 19 years, he has treated and worked on sports medicine teams for collegiate and professional programs, including the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Steelers, the University of Alabama, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Missouri, Duquesne University and Robert Morris University athletics, as well as middle and high school athletic teams.
Dr. Raines specializes in sports medicine, performing arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, cartilage restoration, ligament reconstruction, as well as shoulder, hip, and knee replacement. Dr. Raines has special interests in biomechanics, shoulder instability, the throwing shoulder, and ligamentous injuries about the knee, as well as developmental interests in surgical instruments, techniques, and implant design.
Academically, Dr. Raines has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific research articles, textbook and encyclopedia chapters, presents his research at international meetings, and serves as a journal referee for a number of peer-reviewed journals. He has won multiple awards for his research at the state, regional, and international levels, and was honored among his peers for research both in medical school and residency. In 2022, Dr. Raines was honored by the University of Alabama for his professional achievements in the fields of Athletic Training and Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Raines has a passion for academics and education, having served as an instructor and clinical preceptor for medical students at Auburn University’s Osteopathic College of Medicine and Athletic Training Education Programs at the University of Alabama and University of Missouri. Dr. Raines’ desire for education extends not only to his students, but to his patients as well, seeking to empower his patients and support their decision-making by ensuring a thorough understanding of their ailment and options. Dr. Raines is patient-focused with treatments and interventions being patient-centered and pathology-specific.
